Research and technological innovation
Research and innovation lie at the basis of the competitiveness of people, companies, institutions and territories, and constitute the heart of the Europe 2020 Strategy. Translating strategy into reality requires the ability to act expeditiously in a complex and multidisciplinary sector which, in order to define choices, requires knowledge of technologies, companies, production chains, medium and long term economic and technological. It is a constantly evolving sector in which significant risks of failure need to be dealt with.

RED provides a technology intelligence service based on a database that organizes all the relevant information contained in the applied research projects funded by the Seventh European Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). RED is the result of an analysis of more than 6,000 projects funded and classified according to a taxonomy, tested in nine application areas, which are subdivided into scientific and key technologies areas and which cover the whole of the intervention of the 7FP on science and technology.

RED has been designed with the aim of helping decision-makers to define policies and interventions regarding the formulation of national and regional strategies in accordance with the Horizon 2020 programme and Smart Specialisation; it provides data for definition on the scale of individual technologies and provides additional information on the spatial nature of the geographic location (NUTS 1 and NUTS 2) of financed subjects (firms, universities, research centres) and the type of investment and financial resources covering the seven years of the programme (2007-2013). It also supplies data to companies; universities and research centres that need to do benchmarking analysis or find partners and best performers in specific scientific areas or key technologies.
